Bosch Dishwasher Keeps Running

Name: Ken

Inquiry Type: Appliance repair question

Comments:
I have a Bosch Dishwasher #she44co24c/22 - it continues to run with 1 minute remaining and some water in the bottom. It won't shut off until you open the door.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for your note.
I suggest you call for service on this one. Bosch is a special product and before we consider the electronics on this problem, there may be a pressure switch associated with water removal. Make sure the drain hose is not kinked and there is no obstruction in the drain system.

Joe Gagnon

Dish Detergent Latch Kit

Name: Laura

City: Ann Arbor

Inquiry Type: Appliance repair question

Comments:
My son recently moved into an apt with 3 other college friends, and they are thrilled that it has a dishwasher ....problem is they don't know if it is working properly, and the dish detergent lid will not close. It is an older model Kitchen Aid. Are there areas in the washer that these kids should check to make sure all is in tip top shape without calling the engineer/maintenance worker?  Also, more importantly, the dish detergent top will not shut. Will the dishes become clean if they place a gel pac (Finish orange gel pack) in the bottom of the dishwasher before they start it?  I fear the landlord will not be fixing it in the near future, or at all, and they really want to use the washer rather than hand wash their dirty dishes.

Thank you!  I enjoy listening to you each weekend!

Hi Laura,
Thanks for your note.
There is a latch kit that needs to be replaced inside the door to have the soap door latch. It will work with the gel pack but not as good.

Consumer Question: Faulty Dishwasher Agitator

Name: Joe

City: whitmore lake
Inquery Type: Appliance repair question
Comments: I have a Kenmore washer that doesn’t agitate on the bottom, sounds like something isn’t connecting properly, any comments.

Hi Joe, thanks for your note.
I believe you have a two piece agitator that has 2 plastic dogs between them. The dogs need to be replaced. Take off the top cap and remove the center bolt that holds the agitator down in place onto the transmission. Take the whole agitator to a parts store where they will take it apart and install the new dogs. Please let me know how you make out.

Consumer Question: Dishwasher not cleaning dishes

Name: Gary

City: Alllen Park

Comments:
Hello Joe,
I have a Kenmore Elite dishwasher 5-6 years old.  I has been a good performing machine with no history of problems until the last few days.  My dishes simply are not cleaning well at all, especially the items in the top tray.  i clean it periodically with one of the commercial products available at the hardware store, but not helping any more.  Any suggestions you can suggest would be much appreciated.  I know you have a DIY cleaning procedure using Tang powder.  Do you think that this could help my problem?  If so could you explain how to do the cleaning procedure.  Anything else you could suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Gary

Hi Gary, thanks for your note.
I would ask you to make the spray arms are clean and clear of any debris that might be plugging up the holes in the arms. Very common problem. I also need you to make sure there is plenty of water in the bottom of the dishwasher. Turn it on and let it run for 6 or 7 minutes, shut it off and open the door and check the water level. Let me know what you find please.

Consumer Question: Leaky Dishwasher

Name: Robert

Comments: Hello Mr. Gagnon,
Subject: Leaking Dishwasher, Model # DU840CWDB5, Make: Whirlpool.

I, want to hank you in advance for your assistance.
I, love your Saturday Morning Show.

Question:  Can the Motor and Pump Assembly be replaced on this Dishwasher ?  In your opinion, is this a likely place for a leak to develop ?

Observation:  I, notice the leaking only occurred when the machine was filling with water, when the motor driving the pump started the leaking stopped. I, also noticed what appears to be a water stain on the body of the pump leading to the area where the motor shaft enters the pump.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Answer:
Hi Robert, thanks for your note and the kind words. The pump and motor can be replaced on most dishwashers. What kind of unit do you have. What you have seen is a sure sign that the seal on the motor shaft is bad and water is leaking down the motor. It can also leak into the motor and when it hits the windings, the motor is shot. Some dishwashers can also have a shaft seal replaced depending the model and make. Your can call my son Mark at 734-953-6991 and he'll look up your model number and advise you. Regards Joe Gagnon.

Consumer Question: Dishwasher Repair

Hi, Joe,

My 11 year old GE dishwasher started to make a high pitch grinding noise during a cycle - the noise became very loud and then the dishwasher stopped. I have never had any problems in the past, this is the first incident. It seemed to be draining fine befroe it came to a halt. Would appreciate your suggestions before i call in repair and spend money that is unnecessary, then again, I don't want to run out an buy a new.

Many thanks for being there for us!
Kathy

A: Hi, Kathy,

Thanks for your note.

It sounds as though something went into the pump impeller located inside the tub. Remove everything you can starting with the spray arm and tower and look with a flashlight for a small article jamming the pump impeller. If any problems you can call my son Mark at 734-953-6991.

Consumer Question: Appliance Repair

Hi, Joe,

We have a Whirlpool 'silent partner ii' dishwasher purchased in 2008. During the cycle the motor began making a much louder noise than usual. It ran that way for about a month but now nothing. The 'Cancel' cycle worked and it drained the water but the motor doesn't start up at all. Obviously a repair is needed. Any recommendations here in Clarkston, MI? A new machine is about $500. Ours is in good shape so I'm assuming a motor replacement would be less expensive?

Thanks,
Bill

A: Hi, Bill,

Thanks for your note.

I might suggest Solley's Appliance who has been around for years.

Consumer Question: Dishwasher Won't Start

Hi, Joe,

I have a 5-year old Kenmore dishwasher that doesn't start when the door is closed, even if the lock light is on. I've turned the breaker on and off, turned the water feed on and off, and I've held the start button for 30 seconds but  nothing happens. What do you think is wrong?

Thank you,
Jeffrey

A: Hi Jeffrey,

Thanks for your note.

I suspect you have a problem with the electronic board on this dishwasher. You may need a technician to confirm this.

Consumer Question: Buzzing Dishwasher

Q: Hi, Joe,

My Frigidaire dishwasher (Model number FDB750CC1 - 7 years old) makes a buzzing type noise during the wash cycle. What can be causing this and can it be fixed? Could it be just a bad timer?

Thank you,
Connie

A: Hi, Connie,

Thanks for your note.

I would suggest you remove the lower kick panel and place a long wooden spoon or something against the motor and on your ear. Turn the dishwasher on and if the motor is causing the noise, you will know it. Let me know what you find out.

Joe Gagnon

Consumer Repair Follow Up

Q: Hi Joe Gagnon,

I thought I'd update you on my dishwasher repair. As you know, Mark was able to locate the necessary part which enabled him to rebuild the pump and then reinstall it. The repair entailed three trips to my house. Trip one to confirm the problem: The pump needed a part which he managed to locate. This was remarkable since that part is no longer made. His second trip was to remove the broken pump and rebuild it with the new part (which had to be done at his shop). His third and final trip was to install the rebuilt pump.

His efforts were successful! My dishwasher again runs quietly and efficiently. The horrendous racket is gone. My dishes are clean and I am very happy.

My thanks to both you and Mark,
Evelina

A:  Hi Evelina,

Thank you for the follow up. I'm proud of that boy.
Regards,

Joe Gagnon
