Repairing Broken Glass-top Stove

Name: Becky

City: Ypsilanti, MI

Inquiry Type: Appliance repair question

Comments:
Hi, Joe,
We have an electric glass top stove that is approximately 20 yrs old.  We have a crack in the glass and was wondering if it is still safe to cook on and if it is worth replacing the top or purchasing a new one?  Thank you

Hi Becky,
Thanks for your note.
I suggest you call my son Mark at 734-953-6991 and get a price on the stove top and the cost of repairs. I think you might find it too expensive to repair.

Check the Dryer Door Switch

Name: Willie

City: Appling, GA

Inquiry Type: Appliance repair question

Comments:
Hi, Joe,
I have a 2003 Whirlpool electric dryer. Model# LER5620KQ1
The dryer was working fine and drying well but now it will not run.I have tried to troubleshoot and check these things:
1. I made sure it was getting good current and that the connection was good.
2. I replaced the power supply cord and receptacle
3. I checked the breakers - they were good.

I appreciate your help.

Hi Willie,
Thanks for your note.
Have you checked the door switch? Remove the lint screen and remove the 2 screws in that area. Pop the top up from the front and you can see the door switch.

Joe Gagnon

Hot Water Tank Repair

Name: Bill

City: Ft. Wayne, IN

Inquiry Type: Appliance repair question

Comments:
I have a Reliance 40 gallon hot water heater and think I need a thermocouple assembly I found two online that look like what I need but I'm not sure which one to buy - 9003531 or 9003488 - for my model - 640x0rt. It doesn't stay lit. We removed the assembly and cleaned it, but I still have to light each time with push button inboard lighter. Where can I find out number of part i need?
Thank you!

Hi Bill,
Thanks for your note.
Your problem can be a very different problem than in the old days when you simply changed the thermocouple available at all hardware stores. Call a plumber with the model number and ask what has to be changed to correct the problem. I went through this 5 years ago and I had to buy a whole assembly.

Leveling a Top Load Washer

Name: Monika

City: Clinton Township

Inquiry Type: Appliance repair question

Comments: Hi, Joe,
I have a Maytag top load washer, about 10 years old; it works wonderfully, except for it's constant desire to talk a 'walk'. We have leveled it time and time again. It works okay and then starts to shimmy and shake all over again. I have to open the lid, rebalance the load, and keep doing that until the load is completely done.  This all started a couple of years ago, around the time that one of the 'fins' on the lower part of the agitator inside the washer broke off. Could this be related? According to the two servicemen who have taken a look, it is not related. One thought we might have a 'snubber ring' problem, the other disagreed. We're researching online to see if it could be the springs or another situation. Hubby and I are handy with tools, and are ready to tackle whatever you suggest.

Your help is much appreciated!  Love your show!

Hi, Monika,
Thanks for your note. I don't know exactly what model you have but if it is the old style Maytag with 2 belts, here is the common problem. The four legs have a locking nut outside and inside the frame. These nuts will work loose after years and must be re-tightened. The washer must be leveled using a level and all the lock nuts secured.

Gas Dryer Repair

Name: Roger
City: Ypsilanti

Inquiry Type: Appliance repair question

Comments: I have a Maytag gas dryer that runs but does not produce any heat. I have detected a slight gas odor. Any thoughts? I did shut the gas value off to the dryer.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for the note. Even with a failure of the gas valve system you should never smell gas. I suggest you contact Master Tech Appliance in Ann Arbor and have them check out this problem. Too dangerous a situation to fool around with.

Ice Maker Repair

Name: John
City: Ann Arbor, MI

Inquiry Type: Appliance repair question

Comments: Hi Dr Gagnon!  Your show is GREAT and Very helpful!
Question I have for you is that our refrigerator has an ice maker - and for some reason the defroster heater stays on too long (or comes on too often)  and our ice melts down and all freezes together. Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi, John,
Thanks for your note. Before we blame the defrost system, I would like you to check a few things. Place a piece of paper towel over the ice in the bucket. Let's see if any water is leaking through the water valve after it dumps a load of ice into the bucket. If so, the water valve in the rear bottom of the refrigerator needs to be replaced. This is very common.

Next you need to check the door seals by putting a flashlight into both sections, doing this at night. Shut off the lights in the kitchen and look around both seals to see if any light is showing. If so, heat the gasket with a hair dryer and stretch it out. Door seals have a tendency to return to the original shape when heated. If you still have the problem after these checks, I suggest you contact a service technician to check out the defrost system as the newer model refrigerators use computers tied into the defrost system.

Kenmore Washer DIY

Name: Hayward Davis

City: Flat Rock, MI

Inquiry Type: Appliance repair question

Comments: Kenmore washer 80 series Model 11082985820. Motor is running, water will not drain and agitator does not function AND drum does not spin. Trying to get an idea before attempting to repair...

Hi Hayward,
Thanks for your note. I suspect the coupler between the transmission and motor is broken - very common failure on this machine. This is a do-it-yourself project. All you need is some start up directions. Call me on my radio show this weekend (734-822-1600 ) and I'll get you started.

DIY Clogged freezer drain

Name: Jim

Inquiry Type: Appliance repair question

I have approximately 10 year old Amana refrigerator with the freezer on the bottom. For about the last month the recessed area in the bottom of the freezer section has filled with ice. There are times when a small amount of water can be found on the floor that has leaked out of the freezer section. This refrigerator does not have an ice maker and no water lines go to it. I do hear the defrost timer click and the compressor stops when that happens so it does seem to be working. Is there a drain line clogged causing condensation to leak into the freezer section? If so how can this be cleared?
Thanks,
Jim

Comments:
Hi Jim,
Thanks for your note. What you have is the most common service call on refrigerators. You are correct, there is a plugged drain line. You are going to save over $100 if you do it yourself. If you get into trouble, you can call my son Mark at 734-953-6991.
Unplug the refrigerator, remove the back wall inside the freezer--defrost all the ice built up in the defrost drain pan--use a turkey baster full of hot water and stick it in the drain hole and blow it through. Do this 3 times and you are back in business.

Appliance 411

Name: Pat

City: Livonia, MI

Inquery Type: Appliance care tip

Comments: Hi Joe,

On today's show, you mentioned Appliance 411 to look up your appliances  however, I missed the web site and reason for looking up your appliance.  Was it for recall reasons?  Can you provide me with the info, or where on your site I can look it up?

Also, I agree with the caller from Indiana, it would be great if we could go back and listen to your previous shows.  Sometimes I can't listen on Saturday mornings and it would be wonderful if I could sign in and listen to the previous show in some type of archives.

Thank you and God Bless you for all you do for others.

Hi Pat,
Very nice of you to write. On the 411 thing, I just went to Google search and typed in appliance 411 and found a site for checking the age of appliances. It had nothing to do with any recall but sometimes people write and wonder how old their washer or appliance is. My son told me about this feature to answer a consumers question. Any questions on recalls can be seen on saferproducts.gov. There are 195 million recalled appliances in American homes. Please check out the site and check if you have any. As for archives etc. I will look into it.

Regards Joe Gagnon.

WASHER ARTICLES—STIR THE POT

Originally published in the Observer Eccentric Newspapers

Here are just a few of the many emails I have received on the subject of today’s washing machines. They are typical of the comments I receive in person. Patrick writes: Can you recommend a reliable washing machine mfg. That really washes clothes. I purchased a top loader a few years ago only to discover that its sole purpose is to be a federal government agency mirage. It doesn't clean but does knot and wrinkle everything. This is a fraud! How do they get away with it? These are Rube Goldberg machines that take an hour to do nothing, but they sure do save water. Where are the class action lawsuits to sign up for? Mary writes: Your recent article in the O&E newspaper was so informative! We are about to purchase a new washer and dryer but have some serious doubts about their quality. We have talked to salesmen in stores, and researched each machine online and we are more confused than ever. The dryers are so large now that we will have about 2 inches from the wall when the door to the dryer is open! You have written about the lack of water in the new washers. That scares me a lot. I don’t have time to redo laundry that comes out of a washer still dirty. Also, one of the big things with the new washers is the locking lids! Whose “not so bright” idea was that? I hope that my husband will be able to take that lock off the new washer. Diane Armstrong, a noted author and columnist in Timmins Ontario dedicated a whole column to the subject of clothes washers. She writes: About ten years ago, the Green Movement came into being. We were told to cut back on water usage and electricity or natural gas. Why, in the interest of saving water and utilities, don’t the manufacturers to back to the Suds Saver? They already have the blueprints. But this would be logical. Good Grief!! Consumers must buy and use a product to clean a machine whose initial purpose is to clean? What’s wrong with this picture?

A few columns back I informed you about this recent invention that mounts on the wall behind the washer where you hook up your cold water line. This product allows you to wash clothes with little or no soap and use only cold water. There is a whole video presentation on this product and if you’re interested you can go to greentechenv.com. I saw the video, didn’t believe it but had one shipped to me. I have been washing clothes for 2 weeks now and that’s a new venture in my life. I just can’t believe it but it works. It’s made washing clothes an experiment for me and the results give me the confidence to write about it. This may be the best invention since the microwave oven. I took a 6 year old Carhart jacket that has never been washed and it came out clean as can be using no soap and only cold water. I washed several other jackets and I was pleased. I took a green T-shirt and covered the backside with blueberry juice and mustard. I let that dry for 4 hours and then washed it with no soap and cold water. All that stuff just plain disappeared. I did about 10 of my under shorts and all that stuff disappeared as well. Not only that, but the clothes smell so good and fresh. Suffice it to say that this old guy who is such a skeptic has been made a believer and it will take a team of horses to remove this from my home.

To my knowledge I don’t know if there is anyone selling this product in the area and even if it was sold around here, this column cannot be used as an advertising format. I can tell you it will be soon available at retail locations in the appliance business. I expect this product can save between 3 to 5 hundred dollars annually, depending on how many wash loads you do per week. Isn’t it a shame that the appliance manufacturers couldn’t build this product directly into the design of a new washing machine? I bet that sure would stop a lot of complaints from unhappy consumers.

Multiple Appliances with Problems

Name: Ann
City: canton

Inquery Type: Appliance repair question

Comments: I have 3 appliances with problems.  Our 13 yr old Kenmore washer doesn't spin unless we give it a push.  I think it's the motor but don't know for sure.  My 7 year old Bosch dishwasher isn't draining properly even after cleaning accessible drain in the basin.  My 7 yr. old KitchenAid gas range has a power burner that isn't igniting properly and when it does, the flame is very low.  We used to be able to clean under the burner cover but that doesn't seem to work anymore.

Hi Ann Marie, thanks for the note.

I believe the washer has a worn out clutch assembly. On the dishwasher you need to check the drain hose to make sure there are no kinks in it and check the connection on the garbage disposer. Remove the hose and clean out the spout where the hose connects to the disposer. Clean it out with a table knife. The range may have a need for a regulator and should be checked out before buying any parts. Regards,  Joe Gagnon.

Consumer Question: Learning Appliance Repair

Hi, Joe,

Where can I learn the appliance repair trade? Are there any schools that offer courses?

I am retired and looking to do somehing that i have always had an interest in.

Thanks for your help.

A: Hi,

Thanks for your note.

Recently on my radio show I was talking about a University in British Columbia that teaches appliance repair. There are hardly any schools in the USA and certainly none around Michigan. Yet, we have such a need for experienced appliance technicians in the industry. I have no route for you to travel except to advise you to companies and offer your labors at dirt cheap prices until you get your foot in the door.

Consumer Question: Refrigerator Not Cold

Hi, Joe,

Re: Kenmore/Coldspot  Model#106-58916800 Upright Double Door freezer/refrigerator
The Refrigerator side will not get cold - it only gets cool.

What should be done to fix it?

Thanks for your help,
Robert

A: Hi, Robert,

Thanks for your note.

Look at the back wall inside the freezer. Move the food packages. If you see any snow on that back wall it usually indicates a defrost problem. Defrost heater, terminator, timer. One of these components has failed.

Consumer Question: Water in Freezer

Hi, Joe,

I have a Maytag fridge with the freezer bottom drawer. I am getting an accumulation of water inside the freezer. What is causing this? How can I fix it?

Thanks,
Michael

A: Hi, Michael,

Thanks for your note.

You have a plugged drain! During the defrost cycle the snow on the evaporator melts, drips into a drain trough and then flows down a tube into the drain pan under the refrigerator. Take the back wall off inside the freezer, find the drain hole, use a turkey baster filled with hot water to blow it through.

Joe Gagnon

Consumer Question: Freezer Repair

Hi, Joe,

I have a compact refrigerator and one side of the freezer will not work. It is not getting cold anymore. Do I need to replace this unit?

Thanks,
Billy

A: Hi, Billy,

Thanks for your note.

Your question does not give me a clear picture of what product you have. The kind and model would help.

In general, the compressor fan motor should be checked as well as the fan motor inside the freezer. Sometimes a defective light switch will cause the light to stay on inside the product and give you a poor cooling condition. Before you send a refrigerator to the appliance graveyard you need to be sure it is not worth repairing. It might require the need of a qualified technician.

Consumer Question: Noisy Dryer Danger

Hi, Joe,

I have a squeaky dryer that keeps getting louder. What can I do? I sprayed belt dressing on the dryer belt, but it didn't help. It's a Frigidaire Model FER231ASO and it is about 9-10 years old.

Thanks,
Corey

A: Hi, Corey,

Thanks for your note.

A dryer making noises is a huge fire hazard. Stop using it until it is repaired!

There are drum rollers and an idler pulley which could need replacing. The front panel comes off and then you can check these parts.

Joe Gagnon

Consumer Question: Dishwasher Repair

Hi, Joe,

My 11 year old GE dishwasher started to make a high pitch grinding noise during a cycle - the noise became very loud and then the dishwasher stopped. I have never had any problems in the past, this is the first incident. It seemed to be draining fine befroe it came to a halt. Would appreciate your suggestions before i call in repair and spend money that is unnecessary, then again, I don't want to run out an buy a new.

Many thanks for being there for us!
Kathy

A: Hi, Kathy,

Thanks for your note.

It sounds as though something went into the pump impeller located inside the tub. Remove everything you can starting with the spray arm and tower and look with a flashlight for a small article jamming the pump impeller. If any problems you can call my son Mark at 734-953-6991.

Consumer Question: Overheating Dryer

Hi, Joe,

I have a 1995 Sears Kenmore Heavy Duty 70 series soft heat Dryer Model 96575100. The tumbler won't turn and the dryer overheats. The belt is not broken and the duct is clean. The repairman said it burns out a fuse, but the fuse was replaced. It worked for a day or two and then broke again.

Thanks,
Philip

A: Hi, Philip,

Thanks for your note.

I suggest you get a service technician to take that dryer apart and find the problem. It is sure to catch fire from what you describe!

Consumer Question: Appliance Repair

Hi, Joe,

We have a Whirlpool 'silent partner ii' dishwasher purchased in 2008. During the cycle the motor began making a much louder noise than usual. It ran that way for about a month but now nothing. The 'Cancel' cycle worked and it drained the water but the motor doesn't start up at all. Obviously a repair is needed. Any recommendations here in Clarkston, MI? A new machine is about $500. Ours is in good shape so I'm assuming a motor replacement would be less expensive?

Thanks,
Bill

A: Hi, Bill,

Thanks for your note.

I might suggest Solley's Appliance who has been around for years.

Consumer Question: Agitator Stopped Working

Hi, Joe,

I have a Whirlpool Heavy Duty Washer model number LX9245EQ1. The agitator stopped working and it started making a loud noise. Can this be fixed?

Thanks,
Jewell

A: Hi, Jewell,

Thanks for your note.

Most of the agitators on this washer are a two piece agitator. They are geared together with plastic dogs that wear out. Remove the top nut in the agitator and take the whole thing to a parts supplier and they will break it apart and sell and replace the dogs.

Joe Gagnon
